I am publishing my poems in chronological order according to the time of first draft. Some have been extensively reworked; others not. The Italic year is the first draft year.
1. 1938
Live hearty
For life does not last.
Live hearty
For life goes so fast.
Live hearty;
Make your life a merry party;
Come on, live hearty,
Smarty.
Sing sometimes
And when you sing, dance.
Sing sometimes
And welcome romance.
Sing sometimes:
Take time for play; give joy a chance.
Come on, sing sometimes
These rhymes.

2. 1939
I Laugh with Joy
I laugh with joy, not envying
Prince, tycoon, celebrity, or saint,
And am not frightened by my smugness,
For I can bridge the haze between mind and page,
Make them think what they would not think without me --
My thoughts.
